Salina, November 18, 2019 –Relais & Châteaux, the association uniting 580 of the most prestigious properties and hotels in the world, assigns the 2020 Sustainability Trophy to Capofaro Locanda & Malvasia, a recognition of the impressive work undertaken by the Tasca d’Almerita family towards sustainable tourism. The victory positions Capofaro Locanda & Malvasia at the forefront of global hospitality and recognizes the establishment’s sincere dedication towards reducing environmental impact, involving the local community to stimulate awareness and protecting natural resources and the sea.

Capofaro Locanda & Malvasia lies within one of the five wine estates of the Tasca d’Almerita family whom for eight generations have dedicated their lives to the Sicilian land and its incomparable natural resources. Years ago, Tasca d’Almerita adopted a company-wide sustainability protocol called “SOStain” that relies on a series of defined, measurable, and certifiable best-practices. “SOStain is scientific method, but also a vision, a way to think that guides us and helps us to take care of the world in which we live and work,” declares Alberto Tasca, CEO of the company.

At Capofaro, thanks to the leadership of director, Margherita Vitale, the team has taken extreme measures to reduce the use of plastic in favor of low environmental impact materials: “For our in-room courtesy line we have chosen to abandon single-use plastic, when possible, by packaging in pure cellulose, using shower caps in biodegradable plastic and inserting special toothpaste tablets in favor of tubes. In terms of food and beverage, we consciously pack and store in glass, in PLA (a bioplastic derived from corn) and use paper and recycled cardboard. Our straws are bamboo – natural and completely biodegradable – or metal. The staff use aluminum water bottles. In collaboration with the ONG that we work with within our territory, we’ve organized events dedicated to the protection of the sea and responsible consumption.”

The concept is further applied by the chef, Ludovico De Vivo, who favors the use of local ingredients in the kitchen along with produce from the estate’s gardens. Fish is purchased responsibly, taking into consideration seasonality, minimum size, origin and extinction of various species.

In the vineyards where the local Malvasia varietal is cultivated, preventative measures are carried out by hand using organic defense mechanisms and agricultural techniques that ultimately seek to enrich the soil, the plants and the entire ecosystem.

“At Capofaro, luxury is enveloped in the simplicity of beautiful things: the sea, the vineyards, the volcano, and the ethereal Aeolian style. We care for each element on a daily basis, with a willingness to enhance and enrich them for our community and for our guests. We are aware of the immense potential of our message and our actions,”remarks Margherita Vitale, “and for this reason, it’s a great honor to be recognized by Relais & Châteaux. We take into consideration the impact of each decision on the ecosystem and are proud to know that our efforts and our sustainable practices have been acknowledged.”

The Trophies are a Relais & Châteaux tradition for over 25 years, celebrating the association’s savoir-faireand art de vivreand providing an opportunity to honor leading personalities and outstanding teams as well as unique places. The Relais & Châteaux 2020 Sustainability Trophy is awarded to Capofaro this year at the annual “Rendez-Vous” in London November 17-20 by Duval-Leroy, historic Maison di Champagne in the heart of the Côte des Blancs guided by Carol Duval-Leroy and a virtuous philosophy that embraces integrity, high standards and boundless creativity.
