An extraordinary vineyard overlooking the sea
"We took a seat on a stone wall and began daydreaming".
For years, Alberto and Francesca Tasca d’Almerita had admired a vineyard dominated by Malvasia in a stunning area with a rich history.
Attracted by this extraordinary combination of land and vines, Capofaro was finally created in 2001.
BEAUTY IS LIGHT,
LIKE A LIGHTHOUSE AT NIGHT ON SALINA.
IT IS A FRONTIER LAND
THAT EMBRACES THE SKY
AND DIVES INTO THE SEA.
IN SICILY BEAUTY IS FRESH AND GOLDEN
LIKE A MALVASIA FROM LIPARI.
BEAUTY IS CAPOFARO
AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO CULTIVATE IT.
Illuminated by a historic lighthouse on the bluff, the charm of this 30+ year old vineyard seduces anyone who observes whether by sea or by land. A detailed study of the vineyard revealed the parcel of land next to the lighthouse to be exceptionally promising and worth preserving. And so, in 2004, the “”Amphitheater”” vineyard was planted to preserve the genetic richness of the old vines already present in Capofaro, along with the best genetic makeup of the other parts of the island.
The soils (volcanic, sandy, draining, with high porosity but good water retention) and the dynamic micro-climate due to the proximity to both mountains and sea, have helped to preserve the fruit and maintain freshness and acidity in the wines.
Today, we have the opportunity to compare the expressiveness of Malvasia not only in other privileged areas of Salina (for example, in the high zone of Valdichiesa) but also on another of the Aeolian islands: on the nearby Vulcano, Tasca d’Almerita cultivates another wonderful vineyard that has been passionately cared for over the years.
At Capofaro, a love of wine goes hand in hand with hospitality.
Capofaro, a member of Relais&Chateaux, has created a “feel” that goes far beyond the resort or island hotel concept. It is a place filled with soul, a truly unique wine destination at the center of the Mediterranean. Perhaps, the most spectacular of all. Here you can immerse yourself in the workings of the vineyard, from pruning to harvesting. Choose to take a walk through the vines with a sommelier who will explain the most important stages of care for the vines.
Capofaro is the ideal place for those seeking relaxation, wellness, and immersion in the world of wine. An island escape to discover curated flavors and fine details. It is an encounter between Sicilian cuisine and the gastronomic traditions of the Tasca family reimagined through the best local raw materials, craftsmanship, and creative flair of an eclectic chef.
At Capofaro, nature reigns above all with Tasca d’Almerita as its careful guardian. The vineyards overlook the crystal clear sea, the vegetable gardens and fields blossom in shady corners, and the small white dwellings blend fluidly with the Aeolian landscape. More than just a corner of paradise, Capofaro is a harmonious ecosystem. It is here that Capofaro’s “Amphitheater” vineyard, a lush and spectacular basin set in the heart of the estate, serves as a natural backdrop to one of the most exciting wine bars in the Mediterranean and, certainly, the most coveted of the Aeolian Islands.
Being on the greenest and most agricultural island of the Aeolians, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, with a lush vegetable garden at our feet and many local producers as passionate as we are, allows for a variety of dishes that are simple, seasonal, micro-local and environmentally friendly.
Chef Gabriele Camiolo promises to weave together the tale of typical Aeolian products with the gastronomic legacy of the Tasca d’Almerita family. This combination of historic and modern know-how will be available to guests who wish to try their hand at culinary experiences with ingredients and recipes from the estate.
Be welcomed to crisp white rooms, extravagant shades of the bougainvillea’s fuchsia, the green of the caper plants and vineyards, and the blue of the sea.
By day, Capofaro is a palette of colors that give way to a sky of stars, lanterns, and candles at night, with the outline of Stromboli and Panarea painting the horizon. Here you can relax among the rows of Malvasia, sunbathe by the pool, or just let the night gently lull you and study a sky that only an island can provide.
